License

Last updated: May 18, 2026

This page explains the license that governs your use of the Modula components and the Artifacts you create with them. By using Modula you agree to these terms. For the full legal agreement governing your account, see the Terms of Service.

1. The Components

The Modula component library (“Components”) — the 90+ vanilla Web Components distributed through the Modula platform — is proprietary software owned by Chia Lab Srl.

Access to the Components is gated by an active Modula subscription. You may only access and use the Components through the Modula platform while your subscription is active.

2. License Grant

Subject to the terms of your active subscription, Chialab grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide license to:

  • download and use the Components solely for the purpose of creating Artifacts;
  • embed the Components in Artifacts and distribute those Artifacts (subject to the plan restrictions below).

This license does not give you the right to:

  • redistribute or sublicense the Components as a standalone library;
  • fork, modify, or create derivative works of the Components for distribution outside of Artifacts;
  • use the Components in a product that competes with Modula;
  • reverse-engineer the Components beyond what is permitted by applicable law.

3. License by Plan

Playground (free)

  • Permitted: personal projects, prototypes, learning, exploration.
  • Not permitted: commercial use — you may not sell, license, or monetise Artifacts created under the Playground plan.
  • Attribution: Artifacts must retain the Modula attribution mark embedded by the Components. Removing or hiding this attribution is not permitted.

Pro

  • Permitted: all uses, including commercial distribution and sale of Artifacts.
  • Attribution: attribution is removable at your discretion.

Business

  • Permitted: all uses, including commercial distribution and sale of Artifacts.
  • Attribution and branding: governed by your individual contract with Chialab.

4. Perpetual License on Artifacts

Artifacts you create while your subscription is active are yours to keep. The license granted to the Components embedded in an Artifact at the time of creation is perpetual: it survives the expiry or cancellation of your subscription.

What this means in practice:

  • Artifacts you have already published will continue to work indefinitely.
  • You may continue to distribute, host, and commercially exploit those Artifacts after your subscription ends.
  • The perpetual license applies only to Artifacts created during an active subscription period. Creating new Artifacts requires an active subscription.

5. Output Ownership

You own the content of the Artifacts you create: the text, images, structure, and narrative are yours. Chialab claims no intellectual property rights over your content.

The Components embedded in your Artifact remain proprietary to Chialab and are licensed (not sold) to you under the terms above.

6. Component Updates

Updates to the Components (bug fixes, new features, accessibility improvements) are available while your subscription is active. Upon subscription expiry, you retain access to the version of each Component embedded in Artifacts already created, but you no longer receive new updates.

7. Third-Party Dependencies

Some Components have open-source dependencies. Where applicable, the relevant open-source licenses are included in the downloaded bundle. Your use of those dependencies is governed by their respective licenses.
